Medicare Enrollment Periods
Initial Medicare
Enrollment Period
This begins 3 months before you turn age 65, your birthday month and ends 3 months after (7 months total). This is also a good time to add a Medicare Advantage (Part C), Medigap plan, and/or drug coverage (Part D). It's important to enroll during this period to avoid penalties.
Medicare Advantage or
Drug Plan Changes
Changing your Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), drug plan, or switching from original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan is possible during open enrollment from October 15th-December 7th. New coverage goes into effect January 1st of the following year.
General Medicare
Enrollment Period
You can sign-up for Medicare or change Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) and/or drug coverage (Part D) from January 1st-March 31st. Coverage will begin the following month after enrollment.
